Goku, vegeta and most other z fighters are lazy bums

Outside of training for martial arts tournaments and fights, most of the Z Fighters have absolutely no other ambition or hobby. This single-minded focus is shared between Goku and Vegeta, sometimes to the detriment of their families. Conversely, Krillin being a police officer allows him to take care of and provide for his wife and child. This is more than Goku ever did for Gohan and Goten, with their dad never so much as passing a driving exam. Yamcha making it big as a baseball player also gives him a funny contrast to Vegeta. Whereas Yamcha actually works and has likely achieved a bit of fame for himself, Vegeta does nothing in terms of breadwinning for Bulma and their kids. Thus, it could be argued that Yamcha was a much better partner for the Capsule Corp queen than the spoiled, arrogant Saiyan prince.

It also confirms a sad prevailing idea throughout Dragon Ball: the less that a character has a blind focus on training, the less useful they are to the plot. This means that only characters whose sole personality trait is their training regimen have any real relevance in the franchise's sagas. That's why Krillin is outright made fun of in the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. It seems that in a world of Saiyans and gods, a normal human simply can't get any respect, even if they do have a respectable way to make a living.
